The ʻAlae ʻUla are endemic to Hawaiʻi, however, they have been lost from all of the islands except Kauaʻi and Oʻahu. It is estimated that there are just 712 of these waterbirds left. These manu need high quality wetlands, thriving and expansive loʻi kalo, and spaces that are safe (especially from cats, dogs, pigs, and rats) to increase their population.
This waterbird and its fiery forehead has a strong place in our Hawaiian culture and mythology. One moʻolelo shares that ʻAlae ʻUla got the bright red frontal shield when they stole fire from Maui to give to humans, and as a result were branded for their misbehavior.

A stunning wood block print that captures the spirit of the ʻAlae ʻUla. The accompanying description shares its special story. I bought two prints; matted one in white and one in black. So beautiful!
