- Leis can be constructed of flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, nuts, or feathers
- The photo is lovingly framed by a maile and mokihana lei which is symbolic of Kaua'i island because the mokihana tree is found nowhere else in the world
- Information about kanaka in the photo was provided Jazmin Uluwehi, whose great grandmother pointed out her Tutu Moke Nahulu and his brother Hookaaka Nahulu in the photograph
